I’ve spent years building things. iOS apps, web apps, current one is a form builder.
Looking back, I think I made the classic developer mistake: I got really good at building, but barely built any distribution or online presence.
I keep thinking I could have done much better with some of my previous products if I had spent even half as much time building an audience as I did writing code.
So I’m considering doing something uncomfortable: stop developing my SaaS for the next 2 months.
No new features unless something is actually broken.
Instead, I want to get a decent camera and start creating content consistently. Shorts on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X, etc. Share what I learned building a form builder from scratch, technical decisions, mistakes, costs, AI, getting users, things that failed, and just document the whole journey.
My thinking is that after 2 months I’ll have a much better understanding of who actually cares about what I’m building and which market/use case I should go deeper into.
But part of me also wonders if this is just another form of procrastination
replacing building with “building an audience.”
For founders who have been through this: would you stop development for 2 months and focus almost entirely on distribution/content?
And especially if you’ve built an audience from zero: what do you wish you knew before you started?
