How do you know how generous to make the free tier?

Hi everyone,

I'm building a B2C mailing list SaaS for a specific sector. It's going to have the classic three tier/plan setup. I've been thinking about the levers that are available for me to pull with the free plan.

  • It needs to be generous enough to hook people into signing up
  • It shouldn't be too generous that there's no incentive to upgrade to a paid plan and users just freeload forever

How do you strike the right balance? Any tips, insights or hard-won experience appreciated.
