Giving kids a head start at investing

Some people grow up investing. Others never start.

I think one of the biggest differences is simply whether you ever get to experience what happens when money grows.

I wanted to give my kids that experience without giving them a tonne of money.

They already get pocket money, so I created a concept where the they could watch their money work for them. They pick a couple companies they like to invest in, then the amount of pocket money they receive based on the size of their investments.

Then, when they get paid, they have a choice to spend it or reinvest it.

When they choose to invest they can actually see how their increased earnings makes their money grow faster over time.

To manage the system I built an app the kids can use to manage of their portfolios and see the growth. The app is called Pocket Monkey (pocketmonkey.app)

The idea isn't to teach kids how to become professional investors. It's to give them an early experience of growth, compounding and making their money work for them.

I'd love to hear what other parents think of the idea.
