Do automated email sequences actually reduce churn or just annoy people?

Been running sequences for our SaaS for about 6 months now and honestly the results have been solid. Started with basic onboarding emails, then added feature discovery stuff and monthly value recaps. Churn dropped noticeably but I'm not sure if it's the emails or just better product work happening at the same time. The thing that surprised me is how much it matters to segment properly - generic blasts get ignored but emails tailored to actual usage patterns get way better engagement. Using ActiveCampaign for triggers based on what features people actually use.

I'm curious though, does anyone else find it hard to balance staying in touch without being annoying? Feel like there's a fine line between helpful reminders and email fatigue. Also wondering if in-app messaging or something like Intercom works better than pure email sequences, or if they work better together. What's actually moved the needle for your churn rate?
